General

POLITICAL BACKGROUND BRIEF

1.

The FCO's general political background brief is a reference for UK delegations to international meetings, particularly where the individuals concerned are not familiar with certain delicate political issues. The brief is updated twice each year. An amended brief is due to issue in January 1993 and the existing version now requires revision.

2. For those departments which at present provide a contribution to the brief (see * above), I attach the relevant section. I should be grateful if departments would return it to me or Christine Barrow (K154, 270 3583) with manuscript amendments where necessary. Where departments wish to make major amendments or to add further sections, please provide the text on disc if possible (UNIPLEX only).

3. Those departments which do not at present provide a contribution (i.e. those not asterisked above) might consider if there are any subjects which should be covered in the brief. Contributions should be in final form (example attached for reference) and without page numbers. Classification should not be typed on the brief, but indicated on a separate piece of paper. Please provide the text on a UNIPLEX disc where possible.

I should be grateful for responses, including nil returns, by 8 January 1993.
