THE INTERNATIONAL COMMISSION OF JURISTS (ICJ)
1. The ICJ is one of the most reputable of the Human Rights NGOS. It has its headquarters in Geneva. Justice is its British Branch.
2. When Sean MacBride become Secretary General in 1963 he made the ICJ a leading proponent of stronger international law and institutions to prevent government misconduct. After Niall MacDermot became Secretary General in 1970 the ICJ sought international and national laws to check government power. It remains to be seen on what the new Secretary General Adama Dieng from Senegal will concentrate.
3.
The UK favours the ICJ and has recently donated £12,000 to Justice for a programme to assist Eastern Europe.
4. The ICJ produces well argued and researched opinions which do not hesitate to criticise Western Governments when it is considered justified. Any reports that the ICJ produces should be taken seriously. Any criticism should be dealt with and responded to carefully.
