Our overseas representatives, selection bodies and candidates are all fully aware that CBI Scholarships are for the purpose of work experience and not formal training. For this reason candidates' work experience requirements must be kept within the limits of their qualifications and previous job experience, thus minimising as far as possible the need for management supervision. It also means that scholars are able in most cases to make a contribution during their attachment. Most scholars prefer to be treated very much as a member of the workforce and to be given 'hands on' experience whenever possible. It is generally felt by departing scholars that full involvement in a project or working situation is much the best way of gaining experience in their time with the 'host' firm.

The Department of Trade and Industry provides financial support for the Scheme up to a maximum level of 50% of expenditure, as needed. The balance of the Scheme's financial requirements comes from the contributions made by the firms which accept CBI scholars. Such Government assistance, which this year amounted to total expenditure, is therefore dependent upon continued viability by maintaining an adequate scholars.
