Thank you for your letter of 3 July which continues our exchanges on the planning for our joint scholarships scheme over the next few years.

I note the Royal Hong Kong Jockey Club would prefer to commit a precise sum of £100,000 per year over a three year period starting in 1993/94 and that you would like us to fall in with this plan. We are certainly happy to do so but with the proviso that as I have earlier explained, the only funding we have for this scheme is that from the £40,000 FCOSAS provision and the two-thirds interest from the Bequest of the late Sir Shiu Kin Tang. My only concern is that £100,000 might represent more than would be available

In that event the from such interest in any one year. numbers of awards that we could support would from our point of view have to fall.

Providing you are reasonably assured that the two-thirds of the Bequest interest (both accrued and annual) will cover the fixed annual commitment of an additional £100,000 for the three years from 1993/94, we should be glad to along with this option. I hope this is helpful.

I note the review of our scheme in 1994/95 will address the question of levels of funding in the longer term.

Thank you also for the news about the press release. forward to seeing the text.

I look

Yours
