On

the premise

that

the Scheme would and should continue in its present form, the Committee has reviewed the financial position. The level of contributions has remained

unchanged despite price increases since the inception of the Scheme

in

1988. University composition fees alone have increased by some 30% over the years. Appendix I is a projection of the estimated expenditure until 1996/97. It can seen that without any injection of increased contributions as from 1993/94, the number of new scholarships which can be awarded will have to be substantially reduced in the next few years.

In the extreme situation in the years 1993/94 and 1996/97, no new awards may be offered

Such a position would be most undesirable. Injection Of additional contributions will therefore be required to maintain the prestige of the Scheme and its impact both in terms of the number of scholarship awards and their value.

At

its

last meeting of the UK/HK Scholarships Committee, Members decided that an approach should be made to HMG for an increase in contributions to this Scheme. Mr. Simon LI, Steward of the

the Royal Hong Kong Jockey Club sitting on the Committee, is confident that the Jockey Club would be likely to agree to match any additional contributions from HMG.

Appendix II sets out the financial requirement of the new scholarships to be awarded each year as would necessitate additional contributions
