A Government spokesman said the annual commitment
of £250,000 has to support new awardees as well as students who have received awards in previous years.
"As the cumulative expenditure on students studying under the Scheme is expected to exhaust the annual commitment after 1992-93, it is not possible to award new scholarships without the provision
of
additional funding," the spokesman
said.
