Thank you for your letter of 15 January about Cathay
Pacific Airways.

I have noted with interest the extent of Cathay Pacific
Airways' involvement in and commitment to the United Kingdom
economy and look forward to the continuation and further development of this relationship in future. With this in mind, I have asked officials in the Air Task Force of the Department
of Trade and Industry to write to you, suggesting a meeting to
discuss matters of common interest and how they may be able to
help.

I am also aware of the significance to Hong Kong of Cathay
Pacific Airways' success which cannot be measured in economic
terms alone. It was to help ensure Hong Kong's continued role
as a major centre of international aviation that I visited
Peking last September to sign the Memorandum of Understanding on
the new airport.
The United Kingdom Government will also continue its
efforts to ensure that early agreement is reached with the
Chinese Government on implementing the Sino-British Joint
Declaration by the establishment of all necessary Air Services
