Against this background, I would like to reinforce the point that Cathay Pacific will need the maximum continuing support from the Hong Kong Government, and where appropriate from HMG, in the run-up to 1997 and beyond. Before placing our recent aircraft orders, assurances were obtained from the Hong Kong Government that no changes to the fundamental policies underlying the regulation of air services in Hong Kong were envisaged, and that was a necessary reassurance for the Cathay Pacific Board before making these very large new commitments. Of continuing concern, however, is the apparent logjam in connection with the separation of Air Service Agreements and we do urge that this problem continues to be given the highest priority by HMG and the HKG. I am sure
that it will be.
I am copying this to the Secretary of State for Transport; and also, because of the Rolls-Royce and Airbus dimension, to the Secretary of State for Trade & Industry.
David Gledhill, as Chairman of Cathay Pacific in Hong Kong, has also been copied in to this letter and will no doubt pass a copy to the Hong Kong Government.
