next few years as southern China's economy advances in leaps and bounds. Indeed I see it as the hub of the economic life of the whole Asia-Pacific region, itself destined to be the world's fastest growing area.

Nothing in life is entirely smooth. There will be surprises and setbacks.

Provided But many years have shown how resilient Hong Kong is. it maintains its record of political stability, sound administration, rapid decision-taking and minimal interference by government in business life, then the prospects are excellent. Far from being the end of an era, 1997 will herald new opportunities and, I hope, an even more successful future.

Now I have much pleasure in introducing Baroness Dunn. The Baroness epitomizes the mystical spirit of Hong Kong, combining elegance with steely resolve. For many years the senior member of the Hong Kong Executive Council, she is hopefully soon to become the Deputy Chairman of a British high street bank. It's hard to think of anyone who has made a greater contribution to the Hong Kong of today. We shall all listen with the greatest interest to what she has to say.
