Jens Peter,
1. This is just a line to say how enormously grateful Simon Broadbent, Nigel Cox and I were for the time and hospitality you gave us during our visit ten days ago. I am sorry not to have written before, but pre-election business here and a visit to Brussels have distracted me.
2. It was a tremendously valuable visit to have made, and I was particularly glad too to be able to talk through some of the BTC staffing issues about which you have subsequently written. I will be in touch separately. As you may have heard, I had a word separately with Richard Graham, and I will do my best on his behalf.
3. I am sorry not to have got to you for a drink on the final Saturday, but I had such a rush on that I was barely able to get to my optician, let alone see anything of the museums etc that I had intended to do.
4. We did not pick up much on the Lantau Fixed Crossing front, beyond K Y Yeung's characteristically colourful confession that whatever action was made, there would be a stink. I find that Chris Benjamin is trying to take me out to lunch this week, so he would still appear to think that he is still in with a chance. But as for what the Hong Kong Government are thinking at their most senior levels, I haven't a clue. rather I think that you have got it about as right as anyone has.
