FCO/HKG ECONOMIC AND FINANCIAL DIALOGUE
Many thanks for your letter of 17 March with its very helpful list of issues or events of interest: this will be an invaluable quarry. Andrew Burns, Simon Broadbent and I leave tomorrow for Hong Kong, where we hope to have a busy programme over three days. We have defined our main objective as follows:
To ensure that FCO officials are up to date on key Hong Kong economic and financial issues with a UK and/or Chinese dimension, in order to be able to brief Ministers as required, notably in case of any changes following the General Election, so that HMG can maximise the
effectiveness of its support for Hong Kong's prosperity and stability on a basis of economic and financial autonomy.
We are not yet certain whether we shall need further such exchanges eg on a six-monthly basis.
Your
ww
Nigel.
