2.6 The main conclusion to draw from Table A is that in terms of the
number of foreign banks, Hong Kong is far ahead of Singapore. Indeed, mainly because of the presence of Japanese banks, it has around the same number of foreign banks as London.
2.7 Data from IFS for deposit
banks' total foreign assets and
liabilities indicate that between
1980 and 1991 overall world
growth was about three and a half
times. For Hong Kong growth has
been 13-fold and for Singapore 7-
fold. As a result, Hong Kong's
share of total foreign
liabilities has nearly quadrupled
to about 7%
see Chart 1 - and
-
its world rank has risen from
12th to 4th by end-1991. Indeed
Hong Kong has overtaken Singapore
which saw its share of foreign
assets merely double to around 5% over the same period while its
rank has risen only to 10th from
