After the surge in previous months, local stock prices showed some consolidation in July. Admist uncertainties over the airport talks on financial arrangements, the Hang Seng Index shed 223 points to close the month at 5 881. Average daily turnover declined slightly, from HK$3.65 billion in June to HK$3.41 billion in July.

Prices of residential flats continued to rise in the first half of 1992, but transactions were less active than in 1991. The market for shopping space was supported by the sustained rise in retail sales, with prices and rentals being steady to slightly firmer. Against an abundant supply of office space, there was some increase in demand with a slight pick-up in rentals in some locations. The sales market for office space performed reasonably well. Demand for flatted factory space varied amongst locations but the market remained generally sluggish.
Investment

Retained imports of capital goods increased by 13% in real terms in the first five months of 1992 over a year earlier. Within this category, retained imports of industrial machinery for manufacturing use registered an increase of 18%. On building and construction, activity was still moderate.
