DIGITAL MOBILE PHONE TENDERS

The government is calling for proposals to operate digital public mobile radiotelephone services (PMRS) in Hong Kong.

At present there are three PMRS operators Hong Kong Telecom, Hutchison, and Pacific Link which all use analogue techniques in their systems.

However, due to the very strong demand for mobile phones in Hong Kong, the existing analogue systems will soon be unable to meet. future growth. As a result, the existing operators will be allowed to convert their systems to digital and a new operator will also be licensed.

The government has decided that both the European Global Standard for Mobile-telephone (OSM) and the United States Digital Cellular (US)) standards will be adopted for digital PMRS.

Hong Kong, with 190,000 subscribers, has the highest proportion of band-held portable phones in any sizeable cellular phone market in the world.
