ExCo: Henry continues to fulminate about the choice of C H Tung.
Jardines and the Takeover Code: Sir C Powell put down a marker that his negotiations with the Securities and Futures Commission and the Takeover Panel were not going well. Mr Dinham was being helpful in trying to broker a compromise, but his proposals might not do the trick for Jardines. Jardines may therefore need to come back to seek HMG's help in achieving a resolution of this vexed question in a few months.
British Chamber of Commerce: Henry is happy with the way this is shaping up, but would like the Governor to take a direct role in drumming up financial support from other major British/Hong Kong businesses. I said that Mr Day was now back in Hong Kong, and that the whole British Chamber issue was a high priority for him.
