SHENZHEN AIRPORT

We welcome the gradual opening up of Shenzhen's airport for international passenger and cargo traffic. will help relieve some of the growing pressure at We shall cooperate for this purpose with Airport officials, who have said they recognise the need for their airport to develop alongside Hong Kong. But we must be realistic. Even if the most optimistic scenario of Shenzhen relieving the pressure on Kai Tak came about, we would still need our airport at Chek Lap Kok in 1997 because Kai Tak would still be operating beyond its design capacity. This need has been recognised by the Chinese and British Governments" in the MOU, and the two airports will in fact complement each other.
