I often say that Hong Kong today resembles the New York of the turn of this century. Its thriving economy. Its wonderful people. Its irrepressible optimism, through good times and bad. Its political circumstances are of course very different. But there is every reason why we should look towards the fifty years beyond 1997 with confidence. They will be every bit as successful as the fifty that went before. And when they are, Hong Kong will shine out as an example of how two very different civilisations and cultures can, when circumstances require them to do so, work together for the common good.
