BOOKMAKING
TRIAD INVOLVEMENT IN PROMINENT ACTIVITIES
Annex 'B'
Operators of illegal bookmakers are mostly Triad members or Triad associated. This is necessary to ensure the collection of punters' losing bets. In 1985, it was estimated that $20 million was bet with illegal bookmakers for each of the 65 · meetings that reason. This amounted in sum to a total of $1.3 billion.
CONSTRUCTION SITES
Triad involvement is through extortion. Between November 1987 and November 1989 there were 70 reports of blackmail, criminal intimidation, theft and damage. A
conservative extortion fee of $50,000 per month for each of the 506 construction sites presently underway equates to a total sum of $25.3 million.

in the Territory and each on average requiring one third of a gram of heroin per day, it can be accurately estimated that the drug trade in Hong Kong generates $2.35 billion per annum.
DEBT COLLECTION
An activity closely linked to loansharking. Triad Society members are employed on an ad-hoc basis to enforce repayment. Usually their fees are 35% of the recovered debt.
