HONG HONG- HMOCS ISSUES

discussed with-

-Chris Patten and I met with Michael Portillo to discuss compensation and sterling safeguards for the pensions of Hong Kong members of HM Overseas Civil Service earlier this month.

-We agreed that officials would produce a series of costed options for Ministers to consider later in the summer.

-Appreciate the need to ensure any solution is not a drain on the Exchequer. But our compensation proposals would not be more than 9 million a/year for 5 to 6 years from 1997 and the sterling safeguard would probably cost us nothing.
