The western boundary of the airport island to be

modified. Modification to the western boundary of

the airport island will also be required as a

result of the shifting of the southern runway.

Specifically, in order to maintain an adequate sea

channel between the airport island and the north

Cost and environmental implications

5.

The modifications proposed by the PAA are expected to have significant cost benefits by producing savings in the order of $150 million. No additional costs will be incurred due to

abortive work.

assessment

Subject to the conclusion of an environmental impact

(EIA) currently being conducted by the РАА, preliminary evaluation of the proposed modifications indicates

that the revised layout of the airport island is unlikely to

cause sigificant environmental impacts and may offer some

potential environmental benefits compared with the original design. For example, by shifting the road and rail links to the west, it will be possible to preserve a further two kilometres

of the natural coastline on the eastern coast of the Chek Lap
