When a suitable opportunity arises in the course of your contacts with the Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office, it would be helpful if you would explain the above to them.
bê But heahost important point to be stressed is that AJCJV are in discussion with three Chinese firms with a view to their participating given the right price and conditions, as
in sub-contractors
their consortium. These are: Yiu Lian, a subsidiary of China Merchant Holdings, for the assembly of the bridge deck at Shekou. AJCJV are well advanced in talks with a view to Yiu Lian carrying out the assembly work under the supervision of the Trafalgar House subsidiary Cleveland Structural Engineering and/or Mitsui Engineering and Shipbuilding; China State Shipbuilding Corporation for fabrication of part of the deck structure; and China Harbour Engineering as a sub-contractor to Gammon Construction, Hong Kong, for marine work for the sub-structure of the bridge. (Gammon, jointly owned by Trafalgar House and Jardines, will be AJCJV's lead sub-contractor for the sub-structure.)
You recently had an approach (your telegram of 22 April refers) from someone speaking on behalf of China Road & Bridge who were showing an interest in working with AJCJV. This is no doubt because CRB have begun to suspect that AJCJV could be the favourite for the Tsing Ma Bridge contract. It may also indicate that Hyundai do not have Chinese Government backing (see para 5 above), but it would still be helpful to probe a little on this point.
