DRAFT RESPONSE BY PRIME MINISTER ON THE HONG KONG BRIDGE
CONTRACT: 7 MAY
I welcome the announcement by the Hong Kong Government
today that, as part of the construction of their new airport, they have awarded the contract for the main bridge
to a British-led consortium. The contract has a total value
of about £550 million. I warmly congratulate Trafalgar House and Costains on winning against fierce competition and on the merits of their bid. I am delighted that British industry will be closely involved in the airport bridge, which is so important for Hong Kong's future development.
This news comes on top of other recent successes which underline the importance of Hong Kong and Southern China as a market for British exporters. In particular, GEC-Alsthom won the contract for the Shajaio C power station, worth about £500 million, and Rolls Royce have won the contract to supply engines to Cathay Pacific's new Boeing 777 aircraft,
worth about £300 million.
