in both directions, two dual crossfield taxiways connecting the runways and a single parallel taxiway on the southern side of the southern runway. The separation between the runways, centreline to centre- line, will be 11525m.

Taking into account local meteorological conditions, runway and taxiway lighting, ap- proach lighting and navigational aids will be provided to optimize use of the runways. This includes an instrument landing system with the capability of upgrading the service. to a microwave landing system. as this equipment becomes standard.

Approximately 490 hectares or 40% of the total airport site is required for the runways, taxiways and associated equipment, and land reserved for obstacle clearance.

The runway and taxiway system was

selected as a result of a series of com- prehensive analyses. The initial evaluation focused on funway orientation, alignment and separation. A total of 121 options were considered. The evaluation considered the

extent to which terrain cuts might be re- quired to ensure acceptable approach and departure procedures could be devised. together with implications regarding run- way capacity! The 1,525m runway separa- tion was ultimately selected because it provides a greater likelihood of allowing fully independent operations to be con- ducted, thus maximizing potential capacity. The creation of adequate space between the runways for the passenger terminal complex was an important consequence of the separation decision.

A series of Hetailed computer simulation analyses to determine hourly capacities of the runway and taxiway system was con- ducted. The practical hourly capacities as- sociated with alternative methods of

operating the runways were found to vary from 52 to 85 hourly aircraft movements. taking into account the anticipated development of aviation technology. It was concluded that the forecast demand
