Water Quality
In order to maintain the current frequency of flushing in East Tung Chung Bay, and to preserve the North Lantau shoreline, a sea channel concept was developed to separate the airport from North Lantau,
Computer modelling used to simulate effects of the airport reclamation works on tidal flow and water quality found that the reclamation had an insignificant impact on flows or siltation patterns either near to or further away from Chek Lap Kok.
It was also found that dredging at the airport site and at the borrow areas would have small impact on water quality in the area.
Sewage from the new airport will be pumped to a sewage treatment works at Siu Ho Wan for treatment, together with sewage from the Tung Chung new town. The effluent will be discharged through a long sea outfall.
Marine and Terrestrial Ecology
Long-term adverse effects on marine ecology are expected to be insignificant, according to the master plan.
Due to the effects of the Pearl River discharge, the marine bottom communities in the North Lantau area are already acclimatized to periods of high suspended solids and sediment deposition. They are known to recolonize naturally depopulated areas.
Although shoreline communities on Chek Lap Kok will disappear during construction, the seawalls of the reclamation will offer some scope for recolonization by rocky shore fauna.
