The airport will be served by a multi-modal surface transport system with rail, road and ferry access provided on opening day. A high priority is given to rail travel, as it is expected that 43 per cent of airport trips will be made by rail in 1997.
Hong Kong's new airport at Chek Lap Kok will be the only one in the world with a dedicated rail link that terminates Inside the passenger bullding itself.
The master plan has also determined the projected needs for support and ancillary facilities, with air cargo, aircraft maintenance, In-flight catering and fuel storage facilities strategically located.
The PAA will maximise private sector participation in the new airport. In addition to concessions in the passenger terminal complex, airport-related enterprises will contribute significantly to maximising the efficiency of airport operations and the financial viability of the airport.
"We have also identified land which might be developed as, for example, a cargo village, an industrial park and a business park. In time, our commercial developments may include office, retail and leisure facilities, and hotel accommodation near the terminal," Mr Allen revealed.
"The Authority will assume the overall project management of the design and construction with strict attention being paid to cost and quality controls, and performance," he said.
