Annual aircraft movements (two-way) are expected to increase from 154,102 In 1997 to 375,500 in 2040. The airport's capacity could increase to 86 scheduled operations per hour in the year 2040.

The new airport Island, off the northern shore of Lantau, will be four times the size of Kai Tak airport and cover 1,248 hectares (ha). About three-quarters of this will be reclaimed land while the remaining one- quarter will comprise the existing land area of Chek Lap Kok and Lam Chau islands.

..

The contract for the preparation of the airport platform is expected to be awarded in May. About 176 million cubic metres of material will be moved to form the airport reclamation.

Airport land use in 2040 is predicted to be as follows: airfield (484 ha); passenger terminal complex (277 ha); airline/passenger terminal support facilities (262 ha); airport operations and maintenance support facilities (25 ha); commercial and non-commercial ancillary facilities (14 ha); airport-related enterprises (82 ha); access, utilities reserve and greenbelts (83 ha) and open space reserve (21 ha).

Hydrodynamic studies demonstrated that a sea channel separating Lantau Island and the airport site is needed to ensure that tidal circulation is maintained and the flushing effects of the sea continue to occur. An open sea channel was thus incorporated into the site plan.

The size and shape of the airport site was influenced by the length, orientation and separation of the two runways, and the decision to place major facility development midfield.

The geometry of the runways and taxiways, and the runway separation, was based on dimensional criteria proposed by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).
