terms of MOD interests (eg defence sales, provision of exercise facilities, traditional defence links, balance against provision of previous slots to the region) might more easily be dropped. The conclusion is detailed below.
Suggested cuts from the list at Annex A
USA (from 4 places to 3)
Germany (from 3 places to 2)
Oman
Nepal
Japan
Trinidad and Tobago
Belgium
Singapore
Hong Kong (Reserve)
The meeting also proposed to revise the reserve list to read as follows:
Revised Reserve List (prioritised)
Oman Japan
4.
Jordan (1)
UAE (1)
Nepal
Thailand
Singapore
Trinidad & Tobago
Zimbabwe
Morocco (1)
Belgium
(1) only if an Arab nation drops out
Could you please compare the changes proposed above with the main list and reserve list at Annex A and let me have comments by close of play on 15 May. I cannot invite you to argue for a country not mentioned on any list, or for an extra place for a country: such possibilities (for 1993) have already been negotiated out.
5.
I am sorry to ask you to comment on what is still a hypothetical problem, but MOD officials clearly think it is one
face and be required to react to in short order -
we could
probably before the end of May.
