and on
similar occasions but it is not correct for a lady to
curtsey to him. At meals the Governor is served first.

GOVERNOR'S SPOUSE

•
4.1
The spouse of a Governor has no official position similar to
that of her husband. He/She is not entitled to be styled
"His/Her Excellency", and should not be curtseyed to.
PERSONAL STAFF
In some Territories provision is made for the payment by
Government of the salaries of a Private Secretary or an
Aide-de-Camp or both. In either case the Governor
normally has the sole right of appointment. These members
of the Governor's staff may live at Government House. In
smaller Territories there may be no provision for an
Aide-de-Camp but, for example, a serving police officer might perform the duties of an Aide-de-Camp on formal
occasions.
4.2
A Governor-designate considering appointment of an ADC or
Private Secretary from the UK, should consult the relevant FCO geographical Department before entering into any
commitment.
4.3
There is some advantage in appointing as Private Secretary (or Aide-de-Camp) an officer in the local Service who is acquainted with local conditions and knows personally
prominent officials and non-officials. Moreover, if the
officer selected proved unsatisfactory he can easily be
allowed to revert to his substantive duties. On the other
hand, it is unfair to a junior officer to keep him away for too long a period from his proper duties, and frequent changes in the Governor's personal staff are unsatisfactory.
A more serious objection is that the Private Secretary may
see confidential reports on senior officers under whom he
may later have to serve.
