The grant of leave is at the discretion of the Secretary of State. The amount of leave will not normally exceed that provided for senior officers by the local leave regulations. At present 45 days' overseas leave per annum is granted with first-class passages at Hong Kong Government expense. There is also provision for local leave up to 10 working days.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office will pay passages for you and Lady Wilson and one servant on first appointment and at the end of the appointment, together with the cost of heavy baggage, UAF, car freight and insurance to the scales provided under Diplomatic Service Regulations for a DS officer of your grade.

I understand that Retirement and Superannuation Section, Personnel Services Department, in consultation with the Pensions Department, Overseas Development Administration, are advising you separately on pension and superannuation matters.

Any medical expenses excluded from the Hong Kong medical scheme but available under the National Health Service will be met by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

It has been agreed, exceptionally, that the Foreign and Commonwealth Office will arrange for Boarding School Allow- ances to paid for your son for his remaining term at school and also for bookings to be made for a concessionary journey for him at Easter.

Personnel Services Department have already instructed the Diplomatic Uniform supplier, Mr C McNaughton, to submit his bill direct to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

The Hong Kong Government's arrangements for advances of salary are more limited than those for advances to other Diplomatic Service Officers going as Heads of Mission overseas. We have therefore exceptionally agreed to grant you advances in accordance with entitlements which would have been enjoyed by an SP3 Head of Mission. These would be:

We are prepared to extend the repayment of these two advances over one year. Finance Department require monthly repayments in round pounds. On receipt of the enclosed completed Undertaking to Repay form, and on confirmation of your medical clearance, payment will be credited to your UK bank account usually within 7 working days of arrival in Personnel Services Department.
