OPENING STATEMENT
Mr Patter will rena overnight
I am honoured and delighted to have the privilege to
serve as the 28th Governor of Hong Kong.
It is a heavy responsibility, and I have reflected carefully before accepting. I know that the Prime Minister
and the Foreign Secretary attach the highest importance to
maintaining effective British administration of Hong Kong up to 1997. I pledge myself to work with them in achieving that goal.
I have much to learn about Hong Kong. But I have long
admired the Hong Kong success story. And I come to the job
with a determination to uphold the interests of all the people of Hong Kong first and foremost.
Lord and Lady Wilson have done a magnificent job over
the last five years, and I look forward to continuing their
work and building on Hong Kong's success in the remaining
years of British administration.
