The Governor-Designate slightly amended the opening
statement for the press conference, and Private Office have
amended one or two of the supplementaries in consultation
with Number 10: revised version attached.

The Governor-Designate told me that he had agreed to stay as Chairman of the Party until after the 7 May local
elections.
But he plans to spend the majority of his time
with us from now on. He will work from room W13. John Morris will act as his Private Secretary from room W12A
(telephone numbers to follow).

The Foreign Secretary will see the Governor-Designate on the morning of 27 April. The Private Secretary has already mentioned to the Governor-Designate the possibility of his attending the Secretary of State's lunch for the Governor on
29 April.

I have given the Governor-Designate some briefing papers and he will want to talk these through over the next few
days. He also said to the PUS and me that in addition to
the substance, he and his wife were keen to learn about the running of Government House. The PUS offered to arrange for the Governor-Designate's wife to attend a course on running a residence (perhaps a specially tailored one). He also suggested that they should talk to Lord Maclehose and to Lady Youde (grateful if Mr Morris could pursue next week).
7.
The Governor-Designate wanted to be reminded of the main business on his visits to China/Hong Kong during the 1980s. I have asked ODA to provide an urgent note.
8.
On the date of the handover, the Governor-Designate made it plain that he wished to fit in with the Wilsons'
convenience. He and the PUS agreed that he should say in
