INTERVIEWER:

How difficult a job have you given him?

071 270 3734

P.02

FOREIGN SECRETARY:

It is as difficult a job as is in the gift of the Crown and that

is why it is such good news that someone of that calibre is going

to be doing it.

INTERVIEWER:

But what qualifications does he have for the job, he said for

example this afternoon that he was not going to learn Chinese?

FOREIGN SECRETARY:

He can surround himself, we can surround him with people of huge

experience in matters of China and matters of Hong Kong and of

course we will do that, we are well gifted as a country in that

kind of knowledge and experience. What Chris has, and I have

worked with him in Northern Ireland, I have worked with him in

many difficult situations, is courage, wisdom and determination.

INTERVIEWER:

How do you think it comes to the people of Hong Kong, simply to be

told who their new Governor is without any real consultation?
