I spoke to you on Monday about the liong Kong Defence Records which have been maintained by the Crown Agents for many years. This work was apparently sparked off by the Secretary of State's letter 94003/15/49 of the
16th June, 1950, to Hong Kong, and I was glad to learn that you are aware that it is still being carried on.
The work falls into two main groups
(i) the storage of nicro-filmed records;
and
(ii) the maintenance of personal records of members of
the Defence Forces and Constabulary.
The former involves little work, but we are obliged to find cupboards and storage space for the ever increasing volume of film. The latter work consumes several days a month of a clerk's time, and here again a cupboard is allotted for storage of the documents involved.
The maintenance of records such as these is not a part of the Crown Agents' normal agency business, and we are wondering whether anything of this nature is carried out by the Colonial Office, and if they would be prepared to take over
