FAMILIARISATION VISIT TO HONG KONG
1. I paid a fascinating and tightly-packed visit to Hong
Kong in the week of 28 October. I met a wide range of
Policy Secretaries, ExCo and LegCo members, and British and
local business leaders. I also inspected the defence lands
estate from a helicopter, looked at the Colvin House site,
talked with UKRep JLG and the BTC, lunched with Guo and with
NCNA, and spent a morning at Sha Tin new town. I am most
grateful to Government House and to the Political Adviser's office for a splendid programme.
2. Much of the value of the visit was as a voyage of
discovery for me, and it would be wearisome to record all
that I learned. The focus of many of my conservations was the Court of Final Appeal and I will submit separately on that. This minute covers other points of operational
interest.
