Perception of Present Economic Situation in Hong Kong

Compared with the last quarter, the general perception of the Hong Kong economic situation remains positive.

18% of the respondents perceive the present economic situation as good. This represents a two percentage points increase from July and an eight percentage points rise from April.

Similar to the July survey, only one in five (20%) believes that the economic situation is bad.

The majority (62%) view the prevalent economy as average.

The upper occupational group i.e. professionals, executives, proprietors and traders (24%) and the higher income group with over $15,000 monthly household income (22%) see a more positive economy than the general public (18%).

Nonetheless, it is worth noting that another 24% of the upper occupational group see less hope in the economy and in fact regard the present economic situation as bad. It is possible that their perceptions may be more coloured by certain specific aspects of the economy. For example, while consumer durables and property sales experience growth in purchase, the restaurant business and motor vehicle sales experience decline in volume terms according to government statistics.
