To answer your queries:

For the present purposes, the Society's legal status is as a body incorporated within the United Kingdom by Royal Charter dated 3rd September 1908, and as a charity registered with the Charity Commissioners for England and Wales, registration number 220949.

The organisation and management of the British Red Cross Society (BRCS) is prescribed in the said Royal Charter of Incorporation 1908 and in Rules (which are of the nature of statutory bye-laws, requiring the approval of the Privy Council), the latest version of which is dated 17th June 1976. Both the Royal Charter and the Rules empower the Society's governing body, the Council, to form Branches within territories under British jurisdiction to carry out the Society's activities (Articles 2(3) and 18, Royal Charter 1908; Rules 16 (a) and 17(a), Rules 1976).

BRCS Branches overseas fall into two categories: Local Branches under Rule 16, and Central Council Branches under Rule 17.

The difference between the two types of Branches is that Central Council Branches are allowed

are allowed a greater degree of autonomy under the Society's Rules 1976, although they remain

they remain an integral part of the British Red Cross and are subject to the directions of the Society's Council in London as to general policy (Rule 17(e)).
