COMPANY NAMES

CAN I CHOOSE ANY NAME I WANT FOR MY COMPANY?

Unfortunately you will not always be able to have the

name you want for your company. There are a number of regulations that apply when a company name is chosen. This booklet is a brief explanation of how those regulations affect the name you choose.

It is particularly important that you should make

sure that the name you want to use is acceptable before you complete your company formation documents, or pass a resolution to change the company's name. In some cases an objection to

the name you have chosen could be received

after your company has been registered and the

company could be directed to change its name. It is sensible to consult a solicitor or company registration agent when deciding on a name for

your company.

COULD MY CHOICE OF NAME BE REJECTED?

The Registrar of Companies keeps an Index of Company Names under section 714 of the Companies

Act 1985. You cannot choose a name that is the

"same as" a name already on the Index. You cannot choose a name that includes the words "limited", "unlimited" or "public limited company" (or their Welsh

equivalents) or any abbreviations of those words

except at the end of the name to indicate the

company's status.
