Dear Donald,
LOCAL DIRECTORATE IN THE SSC
Thank you for your letter of 28 November, and subsequent additional information, explaining the circumstances which led the Governor to decide not to include on a general basis the senior academic staff of the public Universities under the Sensitive Service class of the scheme.
The essential feature of the SSC is, of course, sensitivity of the posts held by potential applicants. On the basis that Deans and Professors are, by virtue of their exalted position, arguably in potentially more sensitive or vulnerable positions than their subordinates, the approach adopted by the Governor seems right. As you point out, other academic staff can be considered on grounds of vulnerability under the SSC in addition to being eligible to apply under the GOC.
I am copying this letter to John Morris in the FCO.
Yours ever,
Jeremy.
