Dear Sir

THE WORK PERMIT SCHEME

DEPENDENT TERRITORIES QUOTA

03 SEP 1991

On behalf of our members, I wish to lodge a protest concerning the phasing out of the Dependent Territories Quota of Work Permits for less skilled citizens, and would request that representation be made to the Ministry to re-consider on the following grounds:-

1. This scheme has proved invaluable to the catering industry where

long and unsocial hours do not tempt resident labour.

2.

3.

4.

The phasing out will seriously affect the industry in future years (e.g. less and less replacements for natural wastage).

Hot food takeaway meals (and indeed, restaurant meals) are increasing in demand, and if there is to be a shortage of staff, which there undoubtedly will be, the whole industry is likely to experience a decline.

If the quota must be abolished, shouldn't provision be made over the next four years to allow the quota to be increased, rather than decreased, to ensure an adequate supply of labour for the future?

Your comments would be appreciated, and I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully

WH Yip

PRESIDENT
