The Trade and Industry Select Committee is appointed by the United Kingdom House of Commons to examine the expenditure, administration and policy of the UK Department of Trade and Industry. There are eleven Members of Parliament on the Committee, drawn from both the Government and Opposition parties. The Committee is completely independent of the Government.

The Committee has decided to conduct an inquiry into future United Kingdom trade prospects with Hong Kong, the Chinese hinterland and Taiwan.

The Committee is seeking written evidence from interested parties for this inquiry and will hold several oral evidence sessions at Westminster in February 1991.

The Committee is appointed under Standing Order No. 130 of the House of Commons to examine the expenditure, administration and policy of the Department of Trade and Industry and associated public bodies, and similar matters within the responsibilities of the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland. It has the power to send for persons, papers and records.
