Mr. Li controls a wide range of business interests through his approximately 35% interest in Cheung Kong (Holdings) Ltd. Cheung Kong itself is one of Hong Kong's leading property development companies. went public in 1972 and the shares were over-subscribed 65.4 times, making it one of the best received flotations. Cheung Kong controls a number of other publicly quoted companies in Hong Kong through the group structure and these include Hutchison Whampoa Limited, Cavendish International Holdings Limited and Hong Kong Electric Holdings Limited. The Green Island Cement (Holdings) Limited Group and Anderson Asi Quarry Group are wholly owned subsidiaries of Cheung Kong.

Cheung Kong's acquisition of a significant stake in Hutchison Whampoa in 1979 enabled Mr. Li to achieve a landmark in the history of Hong Kong: the first Chinese businessman to take over as taipan of one of the old established hongs i.e. British owned trading houses. The Cheung Kong Group represents about 15% of the total market capitalisation of all Hong Kong publicly quoted companies. In addition to property development, the Group carries on a wide range of activities which include: the largest privately owned container terminal in the world which by the end of 1991 will have 65% of the capacity of Kwai Chung container port in Hong Kong: over 220 retail outlets in Hong Kong; a cement plant which has the capacity to supply the bulk of Hong Kong's requirements; the Hong Kong Sheraton and Hongkong Hilton hotels; oil and gas holdings in Canada; electric power generation and distribution in Hong Kong; and a recent expansion into the telecommunications and satellite businesses.

The Group currently has over 50 major real estate projects under development in Hong Kong representing a total floor area of 50 million sq.ft.

Included in these developments is Whampoa Garden, a project consisting of 10,400 residential units and 1.7 million sq.ft. of commercial space. The Whampoa Garden site is a former dockyard which has been transformed into an attractive self contained community. Two other major developments, namely: the Kwun Tong/Ap Lei Chau projects, will transform existing large industrial sites into modern residential and commercial complexes consisting of 17,000 resdiential units as well as 473,000 sq.ft. of shopping area. The group is developing a major "new town" at Tin Shui Wei which will comprise more than 15,000 housing units.

Today, Mr. Li is the Chairman of Cheung Kong (Holdings) Limited, Hutchison Whampoa Limited and Green Island Cement (Holdings) Limited; a Deputy Chairman of The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation; and a Director of China International Trust and Investment Corporation.

Mr. Li now controls a group of companies with 1990 combined after tax profits of approximately US$1.25 billion.

Mr. Li is a Justice of the Peace and received and Honorary Doctorate of Laws Degree from the University of Hong Kong in 1986.

He is also a Commander of the Order of the Crown (Belgium), and was awarded the C.B.E (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) in the 1989 New Year's Honours list. He received and Honorary Doctorate of Law Degree from the University of Calgary, Canada in June the same year. In December, 1990, Mr. Li received the DHL/SCMP Businessman of the Year Award.
