Thank you for your letter of 29 July, which the Prime Minister has seen. The following are the Prime Minister's comments.

Itinerary

i. The Prime Minister agrees that he should make one stop-over in Hong Kong - after Peking.

ii. The Governor should come to Peking for the signature of the airport MOU. He need not accompany the Prime Minister throughout his visit.

iii. The Prime Minister would welcome the presence of Alan Paul in Peking.

iv. The Prime Minister agrees that we should aim to arrive in Peking at around 1530 on 2 September, ie leaving London at around 1100 on 1 September.

Programme

i. The Prime Minister would be content to attend a banquet on the evening of 2 September and to give a return banquet the following day.

ii.

The Prime Minister would be happy to meet a representative group of British residents in Peking, as well as a group of returned British Council scholars.

iii. The Prime Minister would like to keep the morning of Wednesday 4 September free for sight-seeing, including the Great Wall and, if possible, the Ming Tombs.

Accommodation

The Prime minister is content to stay in the State Guest House.
