The Departent conducts 3 main "businesses"

health and personal social services;

social security; and

social legislation and the Office of the Registrar General.

The administration of the Department is organised under the Permanent Secretary in 3 Commands and a Management Executive for the Health and Personal Social Services headed by a Chief Executive. The Commands are:

Health and Personal Social Services Policy and Obrategy Command, headed by an Under Secretary;

Social Security Command headed by an Under Secretary;

Central Services Command headed by the Principal Establishment and Finance Officer (Under Secretary).

The Yanagement Executive comprises a number of Directorates huaded by Directors who are Assistant Secretary equivalents. 3 Under Secretary Commands are normally organised into Divisions headed by Assistant Secretaries. These Directorates and Divisions provide the basic units of the MINIS system.

Chart 1 sets out the Department's organisation and staffing to Assistent Secretary level at 2 April 1990, excluding the Managenort Executive. Chart 2 shows the administrative structura and staff in post in the Management Executive to Director level also at 2 April 1990.

Professional staff in the medical, dental, nursing, pharmaceutical and social work disciplines provide services to the Department on policy matters and to the Management Executive on operational issues. They also provide professional services to other WI Departments and the NIO. These include medical and dental prison services, the Employment Medical Advisory Service and staff for the Medical Advisory Unit to the Northern Ireland Civil Service. Chart 3 shows the professionel groups and their senior staffing.
