The general purpose of my present position is to:

provide Ministers and Departments with professional advice, relevant to the range of Departmental responsibilities, on social work, social services and related matters of social policy;

liaise with professional, service and academic interests in the field.

In particular by responsibilities are:

To advise Ministers and Departments on social work, social services and on matters relating to social policy.

To lead, manage and co-ordinate the work of the Social Services Inspector.

To provide lines of communication on professional matters with statutory and voluntary agencies in the field, with professional associations and with bodies concerned with research and training.

To provide links with other government departments and in particular where there functions relate to social work and social services.

To prepare and carry out en annual work programme for the Social Services Inspectorate in consultation with the Divisions in the Department, the Northern Ireland Office, the Health and Social Services Boards and relevant voluntary organisations.

Tu prepare an annual management plan within the Department's top management system.

To manage the budget allocated to the Social Services Inspectorate.

To liaise with professional colleagues in Great Britain on matters of national interest concerning social work services.

To represent the Department on issues relating to social work and social services.

To help in formulating and carrying out Department policy.
