The Prime Minister has approved my Minister's official visit to China. It will be useful while my Minister is in that region him to go to Hong Kong and this has been welcomed by Governor. I am writing to seek the Prime Minister's that he may do so.

approval

The objectives of the visit are to meet senior commercial representatives in the food and fisheries industries with the aim of promoting business for British food suppliers.

The Minister will be accompanied by a senior official from our External Relations & Trade Promotion Division and myself. The Minister would be grateful if the Prime Minister would allow Mrs Gummer to continue as part of the official party, as he has for the China leg.

The official party would travel to Beijing arriving on 26 September and transfer

to Hong Kong on 1 October, arriving

back in the UK early on 4 October as originally planned.

I am copying this letter to Simon Gass, FCO, Martin Stanley, DTI, Greg Shepherd, Government Whip's office, Nicholas Davidson, Cabinet Office, and Lieutenant Colonel Paul Williams, (FCO protocol).

Your ever
