The British Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong was created by resolution of the British business community in January 1987. It had been some two years in the planning with the British Trade Commission in Hong Kong playing a major role in its formation.

The Chamber's main objective is to promote trade, industrial, investment and economic relatins between the UK and Hong Kong and through Hong Kong with the People's Republic of China. It achieves this objective through a wide range of events and activities. These include seminars on topics of current interest, official visits to neighbouring countries, meetings with high level government officials and training. Chamber has a number of specialist subcommittees covering such topics as banking and financial services, China trade, legislation, transportation, construction and programmes and services.

In 1990 the Chamber moved to new premises in Wanchai to offset a 330% rent increase at their old premises. The BOTB provides a one off payment of £12,000 towards the outfitting costs.

The Chamber has been well received in Hong Kong; current membership is approximately 300.

The Chamber's current Chairman is Mr Robert Wallace, Executive Director of Gammon Construction; Mr John Slaughter, Director of Business Development Asia Pacific, Cable & Wireless is Vice-Chairman (Chairman designate).

Mr Barrie McWhirter, formerly Economics Editor with the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, was appointed Executive Director in February 1989.
