VISIT BY LORD CAITHNESS TO HONG KONG HMG SCHOLARSHIPS PROGRAMMES
1. FCO Scholarship Support
FCO support to enable Hong Kong students to study in the UK is provided under the following programmes:
(i) UK/HK Scholarships
This scheme provides opportunities for study in the UK for
candidates with high academic prowess and leadership qualities.
Students are also expected to possess a strong sense of commitment to
Hong Kong and have the potential to contribute significantly to the mutual understanding between the UK and Hong Kong.
This scheme is jointly funded by the UK and Hong Kong Governments
(the Hong Kong Government contribution is provided by the Royal Hong
Kong Jockey Club on the basis that Official funds may not be used
for merit scholarships schemes benefitting only a small number of
Hong Kong citizens).

£40,000 (direct provision) plus a further £85,000 (being the
proceeds of S K Tang bequest which are at the disposal of HMG),
benefitting some 30 students.
(ii) UK/HK Joint Funding Scheme
Scheme introduced in 1983 (along with similar schemes for Malaysia, Cyprus and certain other Dependent Territories). Intended to provide short-term assistance for overseas students from territories
which had traditionally sent large numbers of students to study in
the UK and which were acknowledged to have been hard hit by the
introduction of ful cost fees in 1980. The fee support schemes for
Malaysia and Cyprus are being phased out (in favour of targetted
awards under the FCO Scholarships and Awards Scheme). The scheme
for Hong Kong, which is funded jointly between the UK and Hong Kong
Governments, will continue.
