LORD CAITHNESS' TRAVEL PLANS

1. You and copy addressees have agreed to attend the meeting tomorrow at 9.30 am to discuss Lord Caithness' travel plans for the autumn. He would like to make separate trips in September and October. These might be [a] Hong Kong (briefly), China, Mongolia and [b] Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia (day trip), Sabah (privately), Brunei,

Brunei, PNG. Trip [b] might need to be split in two if it looks like becoming too long.

2.

I attach a list of relevant diary fixtures that need to be negotiated. The principal unknown factor is still the timing of a visit by Qian Qichen. If he comes in late September/early October that would open the way for a preparatory visit by Lord Caithness to China and Mongolia (to coincide with the Round Table) in early September with the South East Asia trip in October. But there would not be much point in going to Peking if both Qian Qichen and Lu Ping were in Europe. Alternatively, to avoid bumping into Mrs Chalker in Bangkok the Minister might prefer to schedule the South East Asia trip (or trips) for September, leaving China for October (when, however, it will be too cold for Mongolia). This might turn out to be the best option.
