PROTECTED PROTÉGÉ

The mood of Canadians toward restoring full ties with the Chinese has been a cautious one. Our criticism of China, post-Tiananman, has been measured and designed to avoid isolating China. I have no plans, at present, to visit China but I have asked a senior colleague, Bill McKnight, the Ministar of Agricultura, to visit China and he will do so next month. As well, Barbara McDougall, the Secretary of State for External Affairs, will meet the Chinese Foreign Minister at the United Nations later this

month.
