Landscape Guidance Notes.

Landcsape Design.

1. The FCO requires the proposals to demonstrate particular qualities in the use of sensitive landscape as part of the design philosophy. Early appointment of a skilled landscape architect to develop the design from the earliest stages will be essential.

2. Rainfall is highly seasonal and limited. Irrigation systems will be unavoidable to cover all planting areas, including lawns and should be allowed for within budgets from the outset. Consideration should also be given to water storage for landscape use and possible recycling of waste water systems for cons- ervation.

3. Careful selection of species will be of importance. However, the FCO believes this does not mean the soft landscape need be barren or stark: the use of extensive screening by plant growth on climbing trellises and on pergola walkways can give both privacy and effect. The FCO expect contract measures to include off-site nursery establishment and mature planting to give early benefit on occupancy.

Perimeter Security.

5. The "secure perimeter" is to be formed by a 3.00m high perimeter wall of solid masonary! concrete construction, or railings, or a combination of both. However, to reduce impact on view, the secure height is measurable on the external (public) side of the wall only. By careful planning of any wall, the effective internal height may be considerably less than the given dimension.Partial combination solutions which impose a limited railing on the top of a wall are discouraged on security grounds. The most likely solution will be a well detailed concrete wall.

6. Security lighting will be on the "outwards lit" principal, with the intention of creating a ribbon of light immediately inside the secure wall, lighting the top of the wall from within. Filings for this work can be low level, and screened within land- scape work.

Flagstaff/Signeage.

7. The Union Jack is the principal Consulate General emblem:

An appropriate and highly visible flagstaff should therefore be located on a building. Royal Coats of Arms should also be provided in appropriate locations on the Offices Building.

Other signs should be limited to a well executed sign at the main entrance and clear minimal directional signs within the compound.

Walkways.

8. Regular pedestrian routes should have shaded pergola walkways, with climbing growth to give both shade and effect.
